How much does custom jewelry design cost at Pav & Broome?

Custom jewelry design is highly customizable and often more affordable than manufactured, brand-name pieces. The total cost depends on your choice of precious metals, gemstones, and design complexity. At Pav & Broome Fine Jewelry in Gulfport, MS, we use in-house Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technology to create 3D renders for your review and approval before providing an accurate estimate. You can also lower your final out-of-pocket cost by trading in gold, precious metals, or gemstones from your existing or broken jewelry for credit toward your new creation.

Are watch and jewelry repairs done in-house in Gulfport?

Yes, Pav & Broome completes fine jewelry and watch repairs in-house at our Gulfport, MS location. With four full-time master jewelers and three watchmakers on staff, we provide complete on-site restoration, ring sizing, polishing, half- and full-shank repairs, and prong replacement. On occasion, specialized watch repairs or warranty services may require sending a timepiece directly to the manufacturer; in these instances, we always notify you and obtain your full approval first. We offer complimentary repair consultations in our showroom.

Can Pav & Broome order or create jewelry not seen in-store?

Yes, we can custom-craft, special order, or source almost any piece of fine jewelry. Our website features a sampling of our vast inventory and designer collections. If you see a style online that isn’t currently in stock in our showroom, or if you have a specific vision in mind, we can typically order it within a few days or custom-create it in-house. We encourage you to visit our downtown Gulfport showroom on Hwy 49 (25th Ave) to explore our full selection of bridal jewelry, fashion pieces, timepieces, and gifts.

What options exist for rings that won’t fit over enlarged knuckles or arthritis?

We offer advanced Cliq hinged shank retrofits that allow rings to open and lock securely at the base of your finger. If swollen knuckles or arthritis prevent your rings from sliding on comfortably—or cause your setting to spin continuously—our master jewelers can retrofit your existing band with a nearly invisible, patented hinge system. This mechanism allows you to bypass the knuckle entirely and “click” the band securely closed for a custom, comfortable fit.

Why do pearls require special care and restringing?

Pearl strands require periodic restringing because natural silk cord stretches, frays, and weakens over time with normal wear. Pearls are delicate organic gems, and a worn string risks unexpected breakage and lost pearls. Our team provides professional pearl restringing and hand-knotting between each pearl. Individual knotting protects the gems from rubbing against one another and ensures that if the strand ever breaks, you won’t lose more than a single pearl.

Why is chlorine harmful to gold, and what is rhodium plating?

Chlorine erodes metal alloys in gold—causing prongs to weaken—and actively degrades the rhodium plating on white gold. White gold is naturally lightened yellow gold finished with a bright, protective rhodium electroplating. Chlorine exposure from traditional pools, salt-water pools, hot tubs, and household cleaners dulls this finish and weakens the underlying metal structure. We recommend removing fine jewelry before swimming or cleaning. If your white gold has dulled or yellowed over time, our jewelers can re-plate it with rhodium to restore its original luster.

How often should fine jewelry be inspected and cleaned?

We recommend bringing your fine jewelry in every 6 months for a free professional cleaning and safety inspection. Regular inspections allow our craftsmen to catch worn prongs, loose gemstones, or frayed cords early before they cause irreparable damage or lost stones. If any piece requires servicing, we provide a complimentary, no-obligation repair estimate before completing the work on-site.

Why is my gold ring turning my finger black?

Skin discoloration under a gold ring is caused by chemical reactions between non-gold alloy metals (like copper or nickel) and external elements.

Common triggers on the Gulf Coast include:

  • Salt Air & Atmosphere: High atmospheric salt and humidity react with base metals in 10k, 14k, and 18k gold.
  • Cosmetics & Cleaners: Fine abrasive particles in lotions, makeup, and cleaners grind metal alloys into a dark microscopic dust on the skin.
  • Perspiration: Natural body acids released when sweating react with metal alloys.

Tip: Remove rings before exercising or applying makeup/lotions, and clean your pieces regularly with an approved jewelry cleaning solution to prevent residue buildup.
